DOMINICA’S WORLD CREOLE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013
The Festival pays homage to fallen Cadence-Lypso Icon, Jeff Joseph of Grammacks International fame, and is being dubbed: Homage to Jeff Jo…Sweet 16! DFC honors one of Dominica’s best known music stars who passed away last November, shortly after he performed at the 15th edition of the festival.
Headline acts on the Sixteenth edition of the Festival include, Reggae superstar Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley, along with a formidable line-up of Creole musical acts and other well-known Caribbean artistes who will perform on the Three Nights of Pulsating Rhythms. Damian, son of the legendary reggae star, Bob Marley considered the hottest musical talent in the region at present, who recently gave what was considered one of the best performances ever at the annual Jamaica Reggae Sumfest, will bring his string of hits, his imitable style of roots-rock reggae and his charismatic appeal to the WCMF during the staging of the region’s most indigenous music festival.
He will be joined on stage over three nights of musical celebrations by amongst others; Dominica’s lady of Song Ophelia Marie and the sensational Michelle Henderson; an All-Star line-up of Zouk Stars featuring Zouk Machine, Tanya St. Val and former Jeff Jo collaborator, Luc Leandre; Haitian Compas masters, Disip Gazzman, Kreyola and T-Vice; and Barbadian Soca super stars, Krosfyah featuring Edwin Yearwood. Dominica’s hottest new sensation, Asa Banton will make his WCMF debut and is sure to be a major crowd pleaser with his string of hits and popular renditions which have been creating waves throughout Dominica, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Paris. Festival crowd favorites and Kings of Cadence Chubby and the Midnight Groovers, will once again showcase their unique brand of “ole skool” Cadence-Lypsoon the final night of the Festival. Fanatik, Dominica’s newest and most versatile band will make their festival entrance and will play back-up to three veteran stars, Derek ‘Rah’ Peters of WCK fame; Fredo of Seventeen Plus fame and the grand master of Antigua’s Soca music, Onyan of Burning Flames. Reggae Prince Royal, Taurus Riley and Dominican Bouyon bands, WCK and Triple Kay Global will also appear on the stage for the Three Nights of Pulsating Rhythms.
In addition, several members of the original Grammacks, the 70’s Cadence-Lypsoband that would make Jeff Jo and Dominica a household name in the French Antilles, France, Africa and the Indian Ocean, will get together for their first ever performance at the WCMF and the first time in Dominica for decades. The group which is being led by former Bill-O-Men lead singer Linford John, includes George Thomas (Friere Soul) guitarist extraordinaire, Bassist Anthony ‘Tepam’ George, drummer Henson ‘Bollo’ Rodney and keyboardist Markie Proper along with Exile One keyboardist, Fitzroy Williams will perform on the final night of the festival as part of the celebrations to pay homage to the late Jeff Jo.
Friday’s opening entertainment gives showcase to rising musical stars doing an idol tribute to Jeff Jo; DOMFESTA and Cadence Lypso winners, Q95 stars Colton T, Asher Thomas, Shameka Sorhaindo and Chad Astaphan backed up by BREVE.
DFC also is preparing a special package of activities to be dubbed “Dominica Night” as a means of giving back to the fans and patrons over these past 16 years with a WCMF 16 Mini Opening Ceremony celebration to kick off the weekend.
Night One, Friday 26th October Opening gala celebration featuring DOMINICA. A night of Bouyon, Zouk and Compas celebration to include Bouyon music pioneers, WCK; new Bouyon sensation, Asa Banton with his many hits including “I Know People that Know people”; Haitian Compas group, Kreyola; and an all-star cast of Zouk artistes from the French West Indies including Zouk Machine, Tanya St. Val and Luc Leandre and Stephane Ravor.
Night Two, Saturday 27th October is a party of the music of the dynamic and most successful Barbadian Soca band, Krosfyah led by the indomitable Edwin Yearwood; Dominican popular band, Fanatik with a slew of veteran front-men including Derick ‘Rah’ Peters of WCK fame, Onyan of Burning Flames fame, Fredo of Seventeen Plus of the USVI and reigning calypso monarch, Dice and Road-march King, Sye; the electrifying and dazzling sound of Disip Gazzman of Haiti; Reggae royal-highness, Taurus Riley of “She’s So Royal” fame; with the pulsating sound of Bouyon heavyweight, Triple Kay Global.
Night Three, Sunday 28th October is a journey to roots music, female superstars and a big tribute to Jeff Jo. This will feature headliners, Dominican music divas, Ophelia and Michelle; Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley; Rising Stars of Dominican music; the debut performance on the WCMF stage by the Original Grammacks International, paying tribute to their late leader, Jeff Jo; Popular Compas band, T-Vice and kings of Cadence music, Chubby and the Midnight Groovers. The headline sponsors of the sixteenth WCMF will once again be telecommunications giant, Digicel, the Bigger, Better Network and the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
